United claim another 1-0 win to go second
United lost keeper Edwin van der Sar through injury at half-time and had to survive a spirited Birmingham display.
Van der Sar saved well from Cameron Jerome and Rio Ferdinand cleared off the line from Gary McSheffrey.
Ronaldo grabbed the winner when he took advantage of Franck Queudrue's error to round Maik Taylor and score.

Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a bitter attack on Joe Cole for the tackle he felt should have seen Chelsea reduced to nine men at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Chelsea were already a goal and a man down when Cole launched himself at Cristiano Ronaldo during the second half of his side's 2-0 defeat to Manchester United.
Getting nowhere near the ball, Cole caught Ronaldo crudely on the ankle but was only booked by referee Mike Dean, a move which triggered a furious reaction from Ferguson, whose mood had not changed after the final whistle.
"Joe Cole should have been sent off," said the Scot.
"Tackles like that are a danger to players. He went right down the back of his leg and could have done some real damage.
"It is the type of thing Cristiano is facing all the time now but Cole got off with it because the referee was balancing things out after the first sending-off."

Cristiano Ronaldo is dating Eurovision singer
Footie ace has new girlfriend - Luciana Abreu
Luciana auditioned for Idolos, the Portugese version of Pop Idol, in 2004 but didn't make it to the final.
A year later the 22-year-old performed for Eurovision as half of duo 2B but again failed to make her mark.
Her big break in showbiz came when she won the lead role in TV show Floribella, playing a poor girl who falls in love with a rich guy.
Cristiano, 22, has remained tight-lipped about his new relationship - despite Luciana being spotted sitting with his sister Katia at a football match in Lisbon.
To catch a glimpse of Luciana, see her perform at the 2005 Eurovision Contest…

Studdy Hell!
Footie star Cristiano Ronaldo is facing a police quiz after being accused of attacking a rival fan.
Carl, 34, says he was left in agony and was treated in hospital last night before making an official complaint to Merseyside police.
Joiner Carl, who was sitting near the touchline behind an advertising hoarding, says the incident happened when he leaned over the board to try to retrieve the ball.
Last night he told us that he feared the arm had been broken – putting his livelihood at risk.
Carl, from Wallasey, Merseyside, told us: “I’m in excruciating pain. I don’t know if I’ll work again any time soon.
“I couldn’t believe what happened. All I was doing was trying to retrieve the ball and then this happened.
“He had a bad day on the pitch now he’s given me a bad day.
“It was a stamp on my arm and the pain is all the way from my knuckle to my elbow. There are stud marks as well. The whole length of the bone is in agony and it has swelled right up. I wouldn’t be surprised if it hadn’t been broken in a few places.”
After having treatment from St John Ambulance medics at Everton’s home Goodison Park, Carl went to Arrowe Park hospital in Birkenhead, Merseyside.Last night he headed from the hospital to give a full statement about 22-year-old Ronaldo’s alleged attack to the police.
A police spokesman said last night: “A number of potential witnesses have been identified and will be spoken to in an attempt to establish the details of the incident.”
The alleged incident took place near the end of the game that Manchester United won 1-0.
Ian Ross, Everton’s director of communications, said: “Our stadium manager, safety officer and my department have no knowledge of this, so there is nothing we can say.”
United said they could make no official comment without first receiving confirmation of an incident.

Watch out Everton, he's back!
The big, big news for Manchester United is that their top scorer from last season, the in-form Portuguese international, is back from the 3-game suspension he picked up against Portsmouth. Yes, I am talking about Cristiano Ronaldo. Boy oh boy was he missed. In his absence, Manchester United dominated games but had no one to put the finishing touch. Ronaldo's return will change all that. If there is one conclusion we could draw from Ronaldo's suspension, it is that Manchester United is a one-man team. They are as much a one-man team as Arsenal were when Thierry Henry was at his best 2 seasons ago. Ronaldo may have been out for Manchester United, but during that time he has been performing admirably for Portugal. He scored against Armenia, and again against Poland. He also fired 5 shots in against Serbia. He will be big for Manchester United this weekend.

Ronaldo: I came close to quitting
In an interview with Champions magazine, Ronaldo, who left his native Madeira for the Portuguese mainland at the age of 12, said he often cried down the phone to his mother after being bullied at Sporting Lisbon's academy.
"As soon as I opened my mouth, they immediately started laughing and mocking. I was traumatised. I felt like a clown. I cried with shame," he revealed.
"I called my mother saying I could not stand it, that the other kids were making fun of me and that I wanted to return home. Today, I am very proud of my accent. I find it striking."
Cristiano Ronaldo says becoming a hate figure has been the making of him. The Manchester United and Portugal star was public enemy No 1 in this country after his part in Wayne Rooney’s World Cup red card last year. Ronaldo said: “After the match I was criticised and whistled at. It was not very pleasant but it did me some good. With this I grew wiser and it helped me to mature."

Ronaldo's music is a foul listen
The Portuguese pansy is a massive fan of camp singer Ricky Martin.
Apparently S-He Bangs around the dressing room to Livin’ La Vida Loca.
And Ronnie risks a fallout with gaffer Alex Ferguson by following in the Latino’s footsteps.
Cristiano’s sister Catia is a pop star back in Portugal and he said: “I love to listen to Ricky Martin and I also love to sing. I will do so on my sister Catia’s next CD.”
Fergie struggled to cope when another man in the famous No7 shirt married a Spice Girl.
How will he feel about Ronaldo being the next chart swinger?
What a winker.

Ronaldo: My girl must be Jolie
The Man United star said: “It is what is inside a beautiful woman that’s important, although she must be beautiful, like Angelina Jolie.
“I appreciate funny, kind, friendly women with good conversation. Laughing is one of my favourite pastimes.”
The pin-up Portugal winger — who recently split from model Gemma Atkinson — told Hello mag: “I’m private about the girls I date. I do have my romantic moments but I am sensible.”
The Sun revealed on September 1 how Ronaldo, 22 — who earns £135,000 a week — and teammates paid £3,000 for call-girls at his Manchester house.

*P.S.* Mind you, this article may be all rubbish because after the orgy story, the press seems to like to write articles about Cristiano's love life!
